4:2 — See note at verse one.

4:10 — living water - see footnote at Genesis 26:19.

4:14 — See The Gospel of John for the evidence behind this rendering. The CT reads: but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.

Chapter 5

5:3 — CT is certain (Level A) that the last part of verse 3 and all of verse 4 are not part of the original text: waiting for the moving of the water. 4 for an angel of Yahweh went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatever disease he was held.

5:34 — may live follows Syriac. Greek CT reads, 'may be saved'. See the entry for 'Life' in the Definitions Section of the Appendix.

Chapter 6

6:7 — 200 denarii. A denarius was a Roman coin worth about one day's wages.

6:19 — Literally, 'twenty-five or thirty stadia'. A stadion was about 600 feet.

6:27 — This verse has been conjecturally reconstructed. See the Variant Exceptions in the Appendix for more information. CT reads: Don't work for the food which perishes, but for the food which stays to eternal life.

6:68 — word of eternal life follows Old Syriac. Greek reads, 'words of eternal life'.

Chapter 7

7:36 — Verses 37 through 39 are not included. See The Gospel of John for the full analysis. The CT reads: 37 Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 He who believes on me, as the Scripture has said, from inside him will flow rivers of living water. 39 But this he spoke of the Spirit, which those who believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

7:52 — The text from 7:53 through 8:11 is not included. This follows the recommendation of the Critical Text. See The Gospel of John for details.

Chapter 11

11:17 — The apostrophe after days and the word [time] are added here so that, when reading aloud, 'four days' is not confused with 'for days'.

11:18 — Literally, 'fifteen stadia'. A stadion was about 600 feet.

11:39 — The apostrophe after days and the word [time] are added here so that, when reading aloud, 'four days' is not confused with 'for days'.

Chapter 12

12:3 — pound. A Roman pound which contained 12 ounces.

12:5 — 300 denarii. A denarius was a Roman coin worth about one day's wages.

12:13 — the King of Israel in literal word order comes after 'the name of Yahweh'; however, grammatically it refers back to 'he who comes in the name of Yahweh'. Accordingly, in order to avoid confusion, it has been placed next to the person that it refers to. See Luke 19:38 where the original word order puts 'the King' in this same position.

Chapter 14

14:26 — But the Spirit, the Supporter follows the Old Syriac. The Greek CT reads, 'But the Supporter, [even] the Holy Spirit'.

Chapter 17

17:24 — what is singular.
