Footnotes

1

The Book of Matthew in the UPDV Bible has been reconstructed from sources other than existing manuscripts of Matthew. The text is mostly from existing manuscripts of Matthew, Mark and Luke, or combinations of them. The chapters and verses have also been renumbered. See the Appendix for additional information.

2

begot when referring to a man generally means to become the father of.

6

from the wife of Uriah follows the Old Syriac and Peshitta. CT reads, "from her who was Uriah's".

16

This verse follows Manuscripts R and O at 17.3ab of the early document, "The Dialogue of Timothy and Aquila" (TA). It is also partially supported by the Old Syriac (Sinaiticus), some Palestinian Syriac, some Greek manuscripts, and Von Soden's critical text, which indicate Joseph begot Jesus but with text included about Mary. CT reads, "and Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary; from her was born Jesus, who is called Christ." For the meaning of "begot", see the footnote at Matthew 1:2.
