Hermes

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Hermes is one of the believers at Rome whom Paul greets by name in the closing salutations of his letter. The Greek name is borne here by a member of the Roman church; nothing further is said of him.

A Christian at Rome

The single notice falls in Paul's roll of greetings near the end of the epistle: "Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers who are with them" (Rom 16:14). Hermes stands third in a cluster of five named men, followed by an unnamed group of brothers identified as those with them. The pairing places Hermes alongside Asyncritus, Phlegon, Patrobas, and Hermas in what appears to be a single household or assembly within the wider Roman church that Paul knows by name and singles out for greeting.
