Silvanus is the longer Latinate form of the name borne by Silas, the Jerusalem prophet who became Paul's companion through the Macedonian and Achaian missions and later carried Peter's first letter to the churches of Asia Minor. The Pauline epistles use this longer form when listing him alongside Paul and Timothy as a co-sender.
